this is a hard question, without knowing what genres you are into. if you like classics, you should look into master and the margarita by bulgakov, because it is an amazingly written satire filled with humor and political undertones. or you may be into picture of dorian grey, with a dark undertone that is a little sinister but irresistible to read. My favorite book recently has been the china garden by liz berry, which is a modern fantasy story, beautifully written.
Otori Tales by Lian Hearn is a great series of books. I highly recommend it.

The first is book is Across the Nightingale Floor, then Grass for His Pillow, Brilliance of the Moon, and Harsh Cry of the Heron. Then a prequel the series was recently released Heavens Net is Wide.
Catch 22 is a top book. Funny too.

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov is certainly about a touchy subject but so well written... it's utterly wonderful. It's full of puns and word play and the prose is so good it almost reads itself.

It's hard to know what to suggest when I don't know what like to read.
I recommend The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Orwell's 1984 is really good its a political sci-fi.
